The world's first social media ban for under-16s has come into effect in Australia.

However, politicians there are refusing to call the controversial legislation 'a ban' - insisting that it's just a 'delay', aimed at giving children more time to grow up, before growing followers.

Some teens in the country shared goodbye messages with their followers on TikTok overnight.

Five million young people woke up to breakfast on Wednesday morning without access to their social media accounts.

The Australian Government says it's about protecting children from harm, though critics are concerned it could drive teenagers towards content on unregulated platforms.

15-year-old Noah Jones, is challenging the law in court, thinks young people deserve a say.

"It's like we've just grown up with this our entire lives, and now it's just being taken away from us.

"All of a sudden, we wouldn't even know what else we could do".

Impacted online platforms will face large fines if they fail to block children.
