Ireland underage prospect Ryan Johansson secures Eredivisie loan

Republic of Ireland U21 international Ryan Johansson has joined Fortuna Sittard on loan from Sevilla.

The 20-year old midfielder will hope to gain some necessary first-team experience with the Eredivisie side.

Johansson joined Sevilla's Atletico second team in January of 2020 from Bayern Munich.

He played 14 games in the Segunda Division, before his season was ended prematurely by a hamstring injury.

Having jumped through many hoops to regain his eligibility for Ireland, Johansson made his U21 debut in May, playing in friendlies against Switzerland, Australia and Denmark.

"We have been able to conclude a very good deal with Sevilla, which benefits all parties," said Fortuna technical manager Sjoerd Ars.

"Ryan is a talented midfielder who can play in multiple positions.

"He is well trained in several countries and at several top clubs. We're giving him the chance gain experience and to develop further in the Eredivisie."

Johansson qualified to play for both Luxembourg and Sweden, but said his heart wanted to continue his international career with Ireland.

"Playing with Ireland in the Under-19s was an amazing experience," he said in May, "I think I was welcomed very well into the team through the coaches and the players – so multiple reasons that made me make the decision.

"But once it came down to it and once my parents asked me the questions, ‘who do you really want to play for?’ and ‘what is your final decision?’,  it was a no brainer in a sense of choosing Ireland.

"That’s where my heart wanted to go."
