The interview process will begin this week to hire as many people as possible who have applied to help the health service at HSE.ie/oncall

The Health Minister's also reminding people not to gather in large groups and keep observing social distancing guidelines.

Although today is Mother's Day, Simon Harris says there are other ways to show affection rather than physical contact.

It comes as a further 102 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the Republic last night bringing the total to 785.

Minister Harris says they're now trying to hire more medical staff to help deal with the crisis.

He says it's overwhelming to see the number of people who have now signed up to HSE.ie/oncall.

Meanwhile, the minister says he'll also use emergency powers to shut down any pubs that keep trading if they don't shut voluntarily.

Dr Tony Holohan, chief medical officer at Department of Health, said: “The department is aware that pubs in some areas of the country are continuing to open, in contravention of existing public health advice.

"If any such premises become known to us, the minister will be advised to use his regulatory powers to enforce the temporary closure of premises in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We are also asking An Garda Síochana to assist in encouraging the public to abide by the public health advice on social distancing by encouraging any groups congregating in public to disperse."
