Ireland's electricity market is hugely inefficient, as figures show electricity customers are paying a lot more than the European average.

It's after Eurostat figures show every electricity customer in Ireland are paying around €250 more a year than in other European Union counties.

Tariffs here are the 4th most expensive in the EU, and Government levies aren't the reason, with net electricity prices here 60% above the European average.

Darragh Cassidy from Bonkers.ie believes the high prices here should be investigated by the Energy Regulator.

"We are vastly, vastly more expensive than anyone else in the entire EU and even the entire European region.

"Prices here are actually 60% above average when you just look at the net price, that's before the Government add on taxes and charges to fund welfare, and so on.

"So it would suggest the Irish electricity market is very inefficient."

There have been a number of providers announces an increase its prices since the turn of the year, including SSE Airtricity, Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis and Energia.
