Hoolahan would love to keep playing after Cambridge promotion

He may be a week away from his 39th birthday, but Wes Hoolahan says he'd love another season as a player.

The former Republic of Ireland midfielder was a key component of the Cambridge United side that won promotion from League Two.

Hoolahan played in 36 of the U's season as they pipped Bolton Wanderers to automatic promotion by a single point. The cult hero scored 7 league goals, and helped out with eight assists.

The ex-Shelbourne and Blackpool playmaker is out of contract in the summer, and admits his future is up in the air.

Hoolahan told Cambridge News it's the love of the game that maintains him, adding, "I train hard, and still enjoy it, that’s the main thing. I enjoy winning, it’s a buzz to win games, and to top it off and get promoted here with Cambridge has been excellent.

“I’d love to carry on, but sometimes obviously your body catches up with you.

“I’ll have a good rest again this summer and see what happens. I haven’t decided really yet what to do."

Cambridge manager Mark Bonner was judicious in his use of Hoolahan, frequently resting the 38-year old for midweek games.

"He’s been brilliant," Hoolahan said, "He’s looked after me very well.

"We’ve always had a chat, what’s best for me during the week, what day should I have off, what games I’m playing, and stuff like that.

“People probably say ‘oh, he’s rested for this game and should’ve probably played’, but it’s worked hasn’t it. We got promoted, and that was the goal at the start of the season.”
