Rangers hit with COVID outbreak ahead of Old Firm and Europa playoff

Rangers' preparations for their biggest week of the season so far have been hit with an outbreak of COVID-19.

Steven Gerrard's side are due to be in Armenia on Thursday for the 2nd leg of their Europa League playoff with Alashkert. Rangers lead 1-0 from last week's first leg at Ibrox.

Furthermore, Celtic visit Ibrox on Sunday for the first Old Firm derby of the Scottish Premiership season.

Rangers haven't revealed the number of positive cases in the camp, but say "those identified as positive are now in self isolation along with ‘close contacts’".

The coronavirus outbreak continues an already bad week for the Scottish champions.

They handed down indefinite bans to an unnamed number of supporters for their appearance in a racist video circulated on social media on Sunday.

The video in question showed a group of fans on a supporter's bus, singing a song which racially abused Celtic's new signing, Japanese star Kyogo Furuhashi.

Rangers haven't made the brightest of starts to the season. They were dumped out of the Champions League by Malmo, and lost in the Premiership to Dundee United.

Rangers statement:

Rangers can confirm that during our testing schedule, we have received positive COVID-19 tests.

Those identified as positive are now in self isolation along with ‘close contacts’.

We have followed best practice in our procedures and protocols. From the outset of the pandemic, Rangers has worked closely with the Scottish Government and Scottish football to ensure the health of our staff is protected at all times.

We will continue to do so.
