This list was recommended by parents.

There has been a seismic shift in the world over the past week in the aftermath of the treatment and loss of life of George Floyd.

People have rightly been mobilised to be better and to be anti-racist. Parents have a duty to their children to teach them about diversity so we decided we would put out a call on Alison Curtis' Instagram feed for people to share book titles they felt can best help kids understand and accept diversity.

We got a great reaction and the info is now included on Alison's highlights on her Instagram. She's @AlisonTodayFM over there.

Some of the titles people suggested most:

  • 'All Are Welcome' by Alexandra Penfold
  • 'The Day You Begin' by Jacqueline Woodson
  • 'My Hair is a Garden' by Cozbi A Cabrera
  • 'Harlem’s Little Blackbird' by Renee Watson
  • 'Rosa' by Nikki Giovanni
  • 'Fredrick Douglass: The Lion Who Wrote History' by Dean Myers
  • 'Sojourner Truth’s Step-Stomp Stride' by Andrea Davis Pinkney
  • 'The Colour of Us' by Karen Katz
  • 'Resist: 35 Profiles of Ordinary People Who Rose up Against Tyranny and Injustice' by Veronica Chambers
  • 'The Youngest Marcher: The Story of Audrey Faye Hendricks' by Vashti Harrison
  • 'Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up to Become Malcolm X' by Ilyasah Shabazz
  • 'This Book Is Anti-Racist: 20 lessons on how to wake up, take action, and do the work' by Tiffany Jewell
  • For older kids, a lot of people said they did this for their leaving cert - Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred D Taylor
